Editorial July 2015
New season for a jolly good sing song

A local community choir will commence its new season of rehearsals on 7th September 2015. Stafford Singers, formerly known as Alstom Singers, have around 50 members and perform a large, varied and constantly growing repertoire comprising music from the popular West End and Broadway shows, traditional and modern songs, religious and choral works.

Rehearsals take place at St John's C of E Primary School, Weston Road, Stafford on Monday evenings, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The choir meets during term time from September until June, excluding bank holidays.

Stafford Singers were originally founded in 1962 as The English Electric Company Choir. After the company's merger with GEC, in 1969, the choir was renamed and several subsequent mergers and take-overs resulted in the equivalent number of name changes for the choir.

The choir predates, but has always been closely associated with The English Electric Orchestra (now known as The Stafford Orchestra).

For many years both choir and orchestra rehearsed at the St Leonard's Sports and Social Club, on the former GEC Alsthom St Leonard's factory site in Stafford. This venue included a snooker room, entirely funded by the then thriving club. The social club itself became very popular, and stars such as The Temptations, Ken Dodd, The Drifters, and Little and Large played there. However, in 2013 Alstom ceased to subsidise the bar at the club, thus forcing closure. The last opening of the club was on Easter Sunday 2013 for a wrestling night. The choir held its last rehearsal there in April 2013, sadly terminating more than 50 years of association with the English Electric group of companies and its successors. Subsequently the choir finally became The Stafford Singers.

Both choir and orchestra moved their orientation from company-based organisations to town-based leisure associations, and there are now no links with English Electric or its successor companies. Stafford Singers are best regarded as a community choir of mixed voices who all love to sing.

Members pay an annual subscription and are provided with a folder of music for concerts. Most concerts are local, in Stafford and surrounds. Stafford Singers have performed concerts for the last 52 years, helping charities and local good causes to raise funds. On request, they will also entertain at local residential homes.

Throughout the year Stafford Singers try to arrange social events and always end the season in June with a Social Evening.

Stafford Singers always welcome new members in all sections: Basses, Tenors, Sopranos and Altos. No experience or auditions are required!

If you enjoy singing, come and join Stafford Singers or just drop in and listen a few times. You will receive a warm welcome by choir members and Musical Director, Cathy Garside. The extensive musical selection offers something for every taste.
